Relationships

Pushing yourself to improve—whether in sport, business, or life—isn’t always easy. Some days, motivation comes naturally. Other days, the alarm goes off, and the excuses creep in—I’m too tired, I didn’t sleep well, I’ll start again tomorrow.
I’ve been there. We all have.
The difference between pushing through or giving in often comes down to who you surround yourself with.
A support crew—whether training partners, colleagues, mentors, or just a group of mates who keep you accountable—can be the game-changer that keeps you showing up, even when motivation is running on empty.
Why Your Support Crew Matters
As an Ironman athlete, I’ve learned much about consistency, discipline, and balance. These lessons aren’t just for sport—they apply to any goal you set for yourself. That’s why I co-founded UAre, a global longevity business that helps people take control of their health, performance, and well-being.
At UAre, we often discuss the Big Four: Movement, Mindset, Relationships, and Habits. This isn’t just about fitness; it’s about building a foundation for long-term success in every area of life.
✅ Movement—Stay active in ways you enjoy, such as running, yoga, or dancing in your living room.
✅ Mindset – Build resilience through mindfulness, gratitude, and positive thinking.
✅ Relationships – Invest in people who uplift and support you.
✅ Habits – Create routines that keep you on track, like prioritising sleep and nutrition.
When you surround yourself with the right people, they help keep you accountable in all four areas—not just in fitness but also in your career, personal life, and long-term goals.
The Power of Showing Up for Your Team
There are those cold, dark, wet mornings when training feels like the last thing you want to do. I’ve been there—lying in bed, coming up with every excuse under the sun. But I also know my training mates are out there, feeling the same way—and they’re still turning up.
So I do, too.
And you know what? Once you’re there, you never regret it.
In professional life, it’s no different. Some days, the challenges feel overwhelming, and self-doubt creeps in. But when you have the right people around you—mentors, colleagues, or business partners—you find the strength to keep going. Success isn’t built alone.
Accountability is Everything
Sometimes, the commitment you make to others is even more important than the one you make to yourself.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve snoozed my alarm three or four times, convincing myself I was too tired, stressed, and busy. But then I remind myself:
🔹 I committed to being there.
🔹 My training crew is expecting me.
🔹 I don’t want to let them down.
So I get up. I push through. I show up.
And those are always the best sessions—the ones where I walk away feeling on top of the world. The ones where we grab brekkie after, laugh about how close we all were to sleep in and realise we would’ve missed out on so much if we had.
It’s the same in business. I’ve had days when I doubted myself when things didn’t go to plan, and when I considered backing away from an opportunity. But I’ve also been lucky to have mentors and teammates who pulled me through, reminding me of the bigger picture.
Turning up for yourself is essential—but turning up for others can be even more powerful.
Finding the Right Crew for You
Your support crew doesn’t have to be elite athletes or ultra-disciplined trainers. It just needs to be the right people for your situation and your needs.
For me, I have different groups I train with, depending on what I’m looking for:
💪 I have my high-performance crew for structured, intense training. We push, hold each other accountable, and strive for constant improvement.
☀️ For more relaxed, social sessions, I go to The Morning Club—a non-elite, inclusive group where we move, watch the sunrise, and connect over coffee.
Both are equally important. Some days, I need the push, and other days, I need the community.
The same applies to your career and personal growth. You need:
A mentor or coach who challenges you.
A trusted team who pushes you to show up when it’s hard.
A support network that keeps you grounded, whether in business, sport, or life.
Make This Your Year to Find Your Crew
If you’re struggling to stay consistent with your health, career, or personal goals, ask yourself:
❓Who is keeping me accountable?
❓Who am I showing up for?
❓Who is making this journey more manageable, enjoyable, and sustainable?
Because when you find your people, everything changes. You stop relying on fleeting motivation and start building discipline through accountability.
So, if you haven’t yet, find your crew, lean on them, be there for them, and keep showing up.
Because the truth is—none of us have to do this alone.
