Consistency, Accountability, and Showing Up—Even When It’s Tough

Here’s the truth: no one is perfect—not even professional athletes. There will be days when you miss a workout or indulge in a less-than-healthy meal, and that’s okay. The key is not to let a minor setback derail your progress.

Some days, everything just clicks. Your body feels strong, your mind is sharp, and motivation comes naturally. But what about the days when it doesn’t? When you wake up tired, your training feels sluggish when you don’t hit your targets.

That’s where real progress is made, not in the perfect days, but in the tough ones.

“All of the greatest athletes in the world have ugly training sessions. The difference is, they show up again the next day.”

One morning, I woke up to an alert from my wearable:

“Not enough sleep. You didn’t get enough sleep last night, affecting your physical and cognitive function. Try to get to bed early or nap to reduce your sleep debt. You’ve got this!”

A younger version of me would’ve let that derail my whole day. But now, I know better. The one-off day doesn’t define your journey—what you do next does.

That mindset separates those who succeed from those who stall. It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment—it’s about showing up, staying accountable, and trusting that small, consistent actions lead to massive results.

My wife’s favourite quote during these more challenging times is, “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Reread it. Now let thank sink in for a moment.

Why Progress Matters More Than Perfection

At UAre, our North Star is to help people build better lives through movement, mindset, relationships, and habits, the four pillars of our well-being improvement plans. One of the most important lessons is that progress is built on consistency, not perfection.

1. Momentum Comes from Showing Up, Not from Being Perfect

One lousy session won’t ruin your progress, just like one good session won’t make you elite. The key is to keep moving forward.

2. Failures Teach You More Than Success Ever Will

In sports, business, and life, the moments that challenge you the most are the ones that help you grow. If you only operated in perfect conditions, you’d never develop resilience. At the time, it never feels this way, so next time you’re hit with a challenging moment, identify it and lean in. It will pass, and you will grow from it.

3. Perfection is the Enemy of Progress

You’ll never feel satisfied if you constantly chase the “perfect” day. Progress isn’t about waiting for the stars to align. It’s about showing up, putting in the work, and stacking small wins day after day.

I learned this lesson the hard way in surf lifesaving. There were days when the conditions weren’t ideal, my body felt off, or my mind wasn’t 100% in it. Early in my career, I’d let those moments shake my confidence, thinking I needed everything to be just right to perform at my best. But over time, I realised that the best athletes who keep winning aren’t the ones who wait for perfect conditions. They’re the ones who adapt, commit, and trust that consistency beats perfection every time.

4. Health (and Success) is a Long Game

At UAre, we believe that health is the most significant investment you can make. But it’s not about one perfect week of training or a flawless diet plan. It’s about habits that last a lifetime.

Show Up, Stay Consistent, and Keep Moving Forward

Success, period, isn’t about having perfect days. It’s about stacking the good ones, learning from setbacks, and building resilience through consistency.

Because the people who achieve greatness, whether in sport, business, or life—aren’t the ones who never struggle; they’re the ones who keep moving forward.

In closing, track your wins, no matter how small. Maybe you slept better, had more energy at work, or simply felt happier. These are all signs that you’re moving in the right direction.
